Dog agility equipment, what is in your mind when we talk about it? Exactly, this is some device used to train dog well for dog agility contest. In the recent time dog agility contest is a kind of game hold every year in United States. This show involves not only a number of kinds of dogs but also good dog trainers and dog owners to train them. Dog agility equipment, both bought and hand-made, is needed to train our dogs well so that they are ready to bind in dog agility contest whenever it is thrown. It is said so because in the dog agility contest, there are some obstacles which have to be challenged and passed through by the dog without making any mistakes.

By training them using dog agility equipment, we make them accustomed to face with a ‘real competition’ so that in the truly agility contest held by a formal organization the dog could do as best as it could and optimistically they could be the winner of the competition. There are some component of the training itself to make a successful competition: the dogs, the dogs trainers or dogs handlers, and also dog agility equipment as well.

Dog Trainers

In the training programs the dog trainers or dog handlers could do anything to convince or push the dogs run through the dog agility equipment, by offering incentives (food or snack), touching the dogs’ part of the body or anything else. Those ways are done in order to quicken the dogs run through the course of obstacles. Hitherto, they could not touch or give any food and snack to the dog while they are competing in a real contest. In the real show, the only thing the trainers could do is giving verbal and physical instructions to their dog. Thus, training using dog agility equipment in a course of training programs has to be maximized so that successfully training program could bring them a win to their real show. Herein, the trainers or handlers’ role is truly needed in order to direct them in that way.

Dog Agility Equipment

One type of dog agility equipment is a-frame. The A-frame consists of 2 platforms which are joined together with a hinge and are lifted up in order to own the hinged connection to be about five to six feet higher than the ground. The form of the device is A-frame, and the dogs have to pass through over it.

The dog walk is the dog agility equipment including of 3 boards attached together at the ends of the boards. The mid board is elevated up to about 4 feet from the ground which gives the dog walk with 2 ramps. The dogs have to go through up one of the ramps to the top board and then pass through down the other ramp to reach the ground.

The teeter-totter is a long board which pivots on a support. The component is created to be a little off balance in order for the alike end of the board to always return back to the ground. This type of dog ability equipment has to be designed so that the tiny dogs that are competing in the dog agility show can make the higher end of the device go down to the ground.

It can be said that A-frame, dog walk, teeter-totter, crossover, weave poles and several kinds of jumps are some usual dog agility equipment used for the training of dog agility. Those devices are employed to improve the dog ability and dog’s speed to pass through the course of obstacles they are faced in a dog agility contest. It has to be taken into account that the equipment are only items used to support the training, while one of the most vital thing is the trainers itself and the dog ability in doing so.

If you have ever brought a new puppy home from the shelter or a breeder, you know how essential it is to get that tiny ball of fur housebroken as quickly as possible. But potty training a puppy always requires patience, consistency and – yes, time. The good news is that the more time you are prepared to commit to the process at the start, the less time your pup may take to learn his lessons well. Keep that in mind before you bring your pup home, prepare well for the process, and you and your pup will be on the right path to a long, happy life together.

The Advantages of Crate Training
Many dog owners have become quite partial to crate training as a means of house training a puppy, and with good reason. A crate can perform a multitude of functions for your pup. First, it will offer a secure place for your pet to rest and sleep. Second, confining your pup to his crate when you are out ensures that your home will still be in one piece when your return. Finally, using a crate for potty training your puppy will teach your dog to hold his urge to eliminate until he is in the proper location to do so. Most dogs will not eliminate in their crate because they know not to go to the toilet in the same space that they sleep in.

Before placing your pup in his crate for a period of time, you must make sure that he has time outside to potty. When you let your puppy out of his crate, you should always take him outdoors straight away. A crate can be a valuable training tool when you are away from home, or if you are involved in an activity for a period of time that will stop you from watching your dog adequately.

Remember that puppies should not be left in a crate all day, although they can sleep in one throughout the night. If you work all day, do your best to return home for lunch to give your pet a break, or have friend or neighbor come by your home to do so.

Paper Training
Paper training does not mean using a rolled newspaper to swat your pet when he potties in the house. That is without doubt the most ineffective means of potty training a puppy that there is. Paper training actually refers to indoor puppy potty training, where you teach your pup to go to the toilet on papers or training pads that you lay down on the floor for him. This method of potty training for puppies is usually best done when you can confine the pup to one room in the house, like the kitchen. Whenever you see your pet begin to nose around the floor as if he is looking for a spot, take your puppy to the paper potty. When he gets this process down, move the papers closer to the door. Eventually your pet will learn to go to the door when he requires to go to the bathroom.

Dog agility, what is that? Dog agility is another sort of dog contests worldwide. The dog agility contest involves the unleashed dogs which have to run through a sequence of obstacles without making any error. To be the champion of the contest, the dog should not make any mistakes and have high speed in getting through the course. The owners or the handlers of the dogs are prohibited to do anything, but yelling out or making any gestures to make their dog run faster through the course of obstacles. They could also run behind their dogs.

The dog agility courses are filled with assorted obstacles, e.g. tunnels and ladders. The courses are generally about one hundred by one hundred feet and the obstacles are given with numbers to show the sequence that the dogs have to complete.

Complicated Courses

The dog agility courses are usually designed to be complicated and are usually too difficult to be completed by the dogs without the coaching obtained by their handlers. The owners need to analyze the course and develop a particular strategy to make their dogs run quickly through the course without making any mistake. Using a map of the course is allowed to help the owners increase their strategy for the dog agility competition.

Scoring Method

It is accustomed to the dog to have only one possibility to complete the course throughout the race. While the dog is fast running through the course the owner of the dog is frequently running behind their dog giving out commands. The score the dog received is based on the number of faults it made throughout his run through the dog agility course.

In dog agility, there are also some punishments that will be given to the dogs if they do some violations. If the dogs do some errors, such as knocking down a bar or failing to run through the obstacles, the dogs will also be punished too. Further, dogs will also be punished with time faults if they take to much time in passing through the obstacles. Some elements which take into consideration in the quantity of time allocated are the level of course intricacy, the level of dog agility contest and any other factors.

In conclusion, dog agility contest will give not only an amusement to the owners of the dogs and also the spectators, but also many others. The contest could also challenge the dog owners and the dog handlers to prove how far they cooperate each other, how far their training and achievement, and how far they could handle their stressful situation facing with many spectators. Do you want to show how solid you are with your dog? Perhaps you can participate in this contest and prove you and your dog’s ability.

Caring for a dog and sharing time together can be very rewarding, but before you rush out to buy that cute looking puppy with the oversized eyes that is looking longingly back into your eyes, what guidelines should you be aware of?

Assuming that you are capable of enduring the initial toilet training and the basics of dog behaviour, what are the main factors of sharing a happy life together with your new found best friend? Well, here are a few suggestions!

First, training. You must train the dog, either yourself, under the supervision of a dog trainer or pass the dog to a dog trainer for a sympathetic training style. This might sound cruel at first, but you at least need to have your pet trained in the basics. For example, if it’s a large dog then you might not want it jumping up onto your furniture and likewise you probably don’t want it to jump it and greet nervous visitors with a lick across the face, whilst his paws are resting on their shoulders.

Other essential basics include recall. When you are out walking your dog in open space, he must be able to respond to a basic command to return to you. This might be when he has seen another dog to play with, an animal to chase or because he has just stepped onto the road as a car is approaching. Recall can save you having to hunt for your lost dog, it might even save its life.

Second is feeding. Many dogs do actually become over fed through too much nourishment and too little exercise. Take the situation in hand at the start and provide a suitable amount of quality food. Limit treats to just occasional treats.

Along side feeding, plenty of exercise is also needed to keep them fit and healthy. This is where many people struggle with their busy life styles and cannot find the required time each day to allow their dogs to exercise freely. Walks on the lead at night do at least give them the basic exercise, but dog also need time off their leads in open spaces where they are free to roam and play with other dogs. In winter, this might seem impossible due to your working hours, but many services have sprung up to assist here, such as the London Dog Walker. Here they will collect your pet from your house, take it for a walk in a local park and a play with some of its friends and then return it home to you.

London dog walking isn’t unique, it happens in many cities and can be a great relief for the owner to know the pet is being cared for, whilst great for the pet as it allowed out of the house for a play. Well worth considering!

Feed your dog well, be the boss and train it and make sure it is well exercised. It’s the start to a health relationship with man’s best friend and you!

Have you heard the customer testimonials about Dynamite® pet food on the radio? They would make you think that there is nothing better to feed your dogs. Well, the stuff IS awesome, and our own dogs get some daily, but there are better ways, and you should know about them!

I like to believe that most people would like to give their dogs the VERY best pet food there is. If this is true for you, here is some background:

There is a destructive myth that dogs are “carnivores.” Dogs are not carnivores – they are omnivores. To be healthy, they NEED to eat both meat and plants. It is HOW they most often eat plants in nature that has created the confusion.

If you can watch a wild canine make a kill in nature, you will see that they go right for the stomach, and the contents thereof. In a healthy herbivore, the stomach is full of partially digested vegetables. For the canine, this is their “salad” before the meat and bone. Through this, the get needed plant-based vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals. To the casual observer, not considering what is in that stomach, it looks like they just eat meat.

If they were to ONLY eat the flesh of animals they would soon become sick and die from either nutritional deficiency or from acidosis. Notice that they eat the flesh AND bones—together, if the animal is small enough. If it is a larger animal, the bone is chewed and swallowed a little later, but it is still critical to the proper utilization of the flesh. The flesh is an ACID ASH food, and it must be neutralized with about four times as much ALKALINIZING bone and vegetables in order to maintain the healthy balance of 20% acid, 80% alkaline.

If you are interested in learning more about all this, pick up a copy of Dr. Ian Billinghurst’s books on the B.A.R.F. diet, or “Give Your Dog A Bone.”

Lately I have heard that, for the “real” Billinghurst raw food diet, you need to be sure to get the original books that he wrote. I have read some reviews of his recent books saying that he has “sold out” to the processed food industry. I don’t necessarily believe this, but I have not read his recent books. My suspicion is that Dr. Billinghurst has come to accept the reality that very few people will take the time to feed their dogs a raw diet. Few would even take the time to feed their FAMILIES a raw diet, even if they understood how much difference it would make to their health. THIS FACT is why the Dynamite® dog food is so relevant to the health of your dog.

The value of the Dynamite® dog food is that it is a fast-feeding kibble that doesn’t contain any of the toxins that are in most ready-to-serve foods. The ingredients are very carefully selected and controlled to assure that the nightmares caused by the mainstream dog food companies are never a factor when feeding any Dynamite product. The food is manufactured in a plant that never allows any preservatives or toxins into the building, let alone into the food.

But, even that was not good enough for the owners of Dynamite. They dreamed of creating a dog food that was a ready-made, easy-to-feed “BARF” diet. This past year that dream became a reality. They are now producing their new “Ultimate Diet for Dogs” — a raw extruded meat and vegetable dog food that is dried into a fine meal. It actually uses fresh-killed whole beef – not “beef by-products.”

The only hooker is that it isn’t ready to just dump out of a bag and walk away from. It is a very dry extruded “meal” that needs to be moistened with about 4 parts water, then stirred and soaked before feeding, and it is BEST when mixed with fresh, raw LIVE vegetables that have been liquefied with water in a Vita-Mix (carrots, spinach, beets, left-over green salad, green beans, etc.). Because of this, most people with busy schedules still prefer to feed the Dynamite® dog food – a kibble that can just be poured and forgotten, but with a clear conscience.

Although Dynamite® pet food might be only third-best, it still beats out all of its commercial competitors! The only commercial food we know of that is better happens to be made by the same company.

It is true that many dogs are not getting the proper nutrition from their diet. It is not entirely the dog owners fault. The truth is that most of the food you find in the store is made out of tons of carbohydrates. Since dogs are carnivores they thrive on a meat based diet. It is not a bad thing to give them a non-meat based treat sometimes though. Even with a good diet, it is important to supplement your dogs diet with all natural vitamins as well. Just like humans, they will do better with a high nutrition diet. So remember to add a good vitamin that is formulated for dogs into their diet. They will be healthier as a result.

Dogs Use Their Tails As Signals and Gestures

Tail position is an important indicator of social standing and mental state of a dog. There will be some variations, of course, depending upon the natural tail position of the dog: a West Highland white terrier will carry its carrot-shaped tail higher than a golden retriever its flowing, feathery tail, and a greyhound’s relaxed tail position is lower yet.

Almost horizontal, pointing away from the dog but not stiff: This is a sign of attention. It roughly translates as “Something interesting may be happening here.”

Straight out horizontally, pointing away from the dog: This is part of an initial challenge when meeting a stranger or an intruder.

Tail up, between the horizontal and vertical position: This is the sign of a dominant dog, or one who is asserting dominance, and translates as “I’m boss here.”

Tail up and slightly curved over the back: “I’m top dog,” this says. It is the expression of a confident, dominant dog who feels in control.

Tail held lower than the horizontal but still some distance from the legs: “I’m relaxed.” “All is well.”

Tail down, near hind legs: This changes its meaning with the posture of the dog. If the legs are still straight and the tail slightly brushes back and forth, it means “I’m not feeling well” or “I’m a bit depressed.” If the legs are slightly bent inward, giving a slight downward slope to the back it means “I’m feeling a bit insecure.

Tail tucked between the legs: “I’m frightened!” or “Don’t hurt me!” This is especially common in the presence of a dominant dog or person, when it can also mean, “I accept my lowly role in the pack, and I’m not trying to challenge you.

Bristling hair down the tail: The bristle in the dog’s tail is a sign of aggression. It may modify any tail position. Thus, with the straight out it means “I’m ready to fight if you are!” and with the tail slightly up or over the back it means “I’m not afraid of you and will fight to prove I’m boss.”

Crick or sharp bend in the tail when held high: this is more characteristic of the dogs that look like wolves, such as the German shepherds, and means much the same as the tail bristing.

Broad tail wag: “I like you.” This is often shown during play, when one dog seems to be attacking the other, pouncing, growling, and barking. The wagging tail serves as reassurance that this is all in fun. It also means “I’m pleased” in many contexts.

Slow tail wag, with tail at half-mast: During dog training, I interpret this as “I’m trying to understand you. I want to know what you mean, but I just can’t quite figure it out.” When the dog finally solves the problem, the speed and size of the tail wags will usually markedly increase.

Bathing The Dog

The rules on how often you should bathe your dog are different from one dog to the next. Various breeds as well as various types of coats determine how often the dog should be given a bath. For example, the Poodle should be bathed every four or six weeks. On the other hand, the Pointer can go three or four months between baths. Other breeds which have harsh long coats, such as the Pomeranian, Samoyed, and the Norwegian Elkhound require less frequent bathing because it tends to soften the coat. However, dogs that are kept in the house most of the time have to be bathed more frequently to keep them clean.

Bathing the dog is important in order to keep the coat and skin clean and healthy. The coat should always be brushed thoroughly before the bath. This will help to remove all dead hair and all mats from the coats of long-haired dogs.

The next step is to prepare the materials you are going to use before the bath. The following is a list of supplies you will need:

1. Shampoo (regular or special shampoos for conditioning, color, coat, etc.)

2. Bristle Brush

3. Sponge

4. Rubber Tub Mat

5. Two Thick Bath-size Towels

6. Chain and Choke (to secure dog)

7. Spray Hose

8. Cream Rinse (long-haired breeds with the exception of the Poodle and Terriers).

Always remember to secure your dog safely in the tub. A chain and choke is necessary for this, giving the dog about a foot and a half of slack. This will make sure that the dog cannot jump from the tub and injure himself.

Using a spray hose, wet the coat thoroughly with warm water. Next, apply the shampoo to the dog’s coat with a sponge, paying special attention to the ears, rectum area, and pads of the feet. These three areas are usually neglected by most groomers when bathing the dog. A small bristle brush may be used to scrub the head, ears, pads of the feet, and other extremely dirty areas of the coat. When the coat is thoroughly soaped and scrubbed, rinse it with warm water. When rinsing, place the thumb over the ear opening to keep water out of the ears. Also keep a hand over the eyes to prevent any soap from getting into them. Since every dog should have a double bath, repeat the soaping and rinsing process. On the last rinse be sure to get all of the soap out of the coat. Gently squeeze the hair on the legs, tail, ears, and all parts of the dog’s body with your hands to remove excess water. You must first towel dry before using a dryer.

Greyhounds are beautiful animal athletes. As they race and perform through their profesional careers, they normally race until they are between 1.5 and 4 years old. During this time, they become accustomed to being walked and lead on a leash, so upon retirement from their racing careers, they make gentle pets!

As a former athlete, they are smart, quiet, calm, clean, gentle, and generally good-natured and happy to adapt to a new home environment. They respond well to positive attention and reinforcement and so they are a pleasure to train and work with for the new homes they become a part of.

They love affection and although they do need exercise, they do not need as much room to run as many might think. Inside the home, they like to curl up in a corner on a gentle rug. They are gentle creatures and very well behaved inside a home and around people.

Greyhounds spend most of their lives with other dogs, trainers, and handlers, so they are very sociable animals and get along well with others. Their temperament makes them an excellent breed to be around kids. Their intelligence and devotion make them an excellent companion. And because they are well mannered, they are well behaved around company and in public.

There is certainly a local Greyhound Pets of America club near you. So think about adopting a former Greyhound athlete. For more information, check out the Greyhound Pets of America Tucson Chapter. Various clubs have different expectations and fees, but each will welcome you to come visit and find out more about whether a Greyhound might be right for you!

Please help by volunteering your time. All local clubs need volunteers to help with funding, veterinary appointments, and even just shopping for doggie supplies. Of course, monetary donations are also valuable, but your time and love is needed most!
