I like to believe that most people would like to give their dogs the VERY best dog food there is. If this is true for you, here is some background:

Lately I have heard that, for the “real” Billinghurst raw food diet, you need to be sure to get the original books that he wrote. I have read some reviews of his recent books saying that he has “sold out” to the processed food industry. I don’t necessarily believe this, but I have not read his recent books. My suspicion is that Dr. Billinghurst has come to accept the reality that very few people will take the time to feed their dogs a raw diet. Few would even take the time to feed their FAMILIES a raw diet, even if they understood how much difference it would make to their health. The Labrador is the most popular breed of dog in the world and aside from all of its positive traits it can also be a very healthy breed of dog as well. But like every other breed there are Labrador health problems to be aware of and keep a look out for. You can expect a healthy Labrador to live between twelve and fifteen years and with proper medical care, and regular checkups, there is no reason to not expect that kind of life span out of your dog.

However there are some Labrador health problems you should be aware of and if you start to see signs of problems then get your dog to the vet immediately. In the larger Labradors there could be hip dysplasia, which is when the hip joints are not formed properly together. This condition gets worse over time but can be treated. The elbow joint of the Labrador is an area that could also be experiencing problems and causing your dog to experience pain when walking. Another fairly common Labrador health problem is eye infections. You can see an eye infection coming from the excess fluid in your dog’s eye. If you start to notice the excess fluid in the eye, and your dog constantly trying to clean their eyes, then you need to get this particular Labrador health problem addressed right away to avoid further complications. A constant attempt to clean an infected eye can lead to many more problems so get the problem addressed immediately.
Sometimes the Labrador health problems that your dog can experience don’t seem so bad to you but they are devastating to your dog. Labradors love to eat and usually their owners love to feed them. However obesity is a huge Labrador health problem and it is up to the owner to regulate their dog’s diet to be certain that they are not eating too much. Also make sure your Labrador gets plenty of exercise every day to avoid obesity and just getting lazy in general.

With such a large number of different types of dog foods out there, which dog food should I buy to ensure my pet’s good health?

It is a responsible dog owner’s job to select a balanced and nutritious dog food for your dog.

The simplest way to make a good determination on which dog food is best, read the label through and through. Don’t just glance at it, be sure to read each and every item.

The label on a bag of dog food will list the ingredients from greatest weight to least. This is important to know because you will learn what components are present in the food in their specific amounts.
- If the first ingredient is whole meat of any kind, don’t accept it as this measurement is taken before the meat is rendered.
- Animal by-products present in dog food indicate a cheap low quality alternative.
- Read the moisture level, if it is anything over 11, this indicates that the dry matter basis is of a low quality.

Things to look for:

- If Whole meat is not the first ingredient and Chicken or beef Meal is, this is good. This tells you that the amount of meat protein is a lot higher than it would be with whole meat as the listed first ingredient.
- Premier dog food don’t contain any animal by-product. This is good.
- Premier dog foods will usually contain less or equal to 10% moisture. This is ideal.

How To Wean Puppies

Most dog owners allow their pups to eat directly from the mother’s bowl as soon as they are able to do so. This enables them to learn, by observation, how to eat. However, continuing this practice for more than a few days after the puppies begin to eat has several objectionable features.

First, the mother usually is not eating the same diet that her puppies should be eating. Second, the mother often resents her puppies eating from her bowl and will snarl and snap at them when they start to investigate or experiment with her food. Such behavior is hardly conducive to an atmosphere for teaching little puppies that the food pan is one of the best places to know. Finally, feeding containers for mothers are seldom fitting for tiny pups, and vice versa.

If the suckling puppy’s diet has contained some solid food beginning three to four weeks after he was whelped, he will be weaned by six to seven weeks of age. If the pup has been orphaned and hand-fed, he will have to be trained by hand to eat solid foods.

Teaching the young puppy to eat can be a very funny experience. To some dog owners, it may also seem like a time-wasting step in raising a dog. By individually hand-training each pup, however, you can ensure that no pup will fall behind nutritionally simply because he does not know how to eat food from a pan.

Infant puppies should get their first lesson in eating from a pan on an individual basis and without the distraction from littermates. Place the pup up to the pan of food and stick his muzzle in. Try not to get his nose in, if that’s possible. Some puppies tend to splatter and fuss when milk hits them in the face for the first time! Repeat the dunking several times. Once the puppy gets the idea, let him have his own way to explore and experiment with the pan full of food. Some puppies get the hang of pan-feeding almost instantly. One lick of their tongues and they are after the milk mixture as if it was their first meal in a week.

After a few minutes, or before your patience runs out, pick the puppy up and wipe off the excess milk with a damp cloth. Dry the dampened hair and put the pup back with his litter mates. Then try another, until every pup in the litter has had a turn. Once you have succeeded in training one or two pups to become proficient eaters, it may help to put a slow learned pup up to the bowl with one of the good eaters.

Greyhounds are wonderful animal racers. As they work and perform throughout their profesional careers, they normally race until they are between 1.5 and 4 years old. Throughout this time, they become adjusted to being walked and lead on a leash, so upon retirement from their profesional careers, they make gentle pets!

As a former athlete, they are intelligent, quiet, calm, clean, gentle, and generally good-natured and happy to adapt to a new home environment. They react well to positive attention and reinforcement and thus they are a pleasure to train and work with for the new homes they become a part of.

They love affection and although they do want exercise, they do not need as much space to run as people might think. Inside the house, they like to curl up in a corner on a soft blanket. They are quiet creatures and perfectly well behaved inside a house and around people.

Greyhounds spend most of their life with other dogs, trainers, and handlers, thus they are very sociable breed and get along well with others. Their temperament makes them an wonderful breed to be near children. Their intelligence and devotion make them an perfect companion. And since they are well mannered, they are well behaved around company and in public.

The Right Food For Your Dalmatian: Part 1

Having the proper nutrition is one of the most important aspects of raising a healthy Dalmatian and yet it is often the source of controversy among breeders, veterinarians, pet owners and dog food manufacturers.

All Dalmatians are susceptible to forming life-threatening urinary tract “stones” though these can be effectively managed with diet. Although susceptibility to forming these “stones” is present in almost all Dalmatians.

Most dog foods are sold based on how to make a product appealing to owners instead of what would meet the needs of dogs. We want a dog food that specifically meets our dog’s needs, economical and causes few, if any, problems. In this particular case that must be 101 dalmations sort of food.

Most foods come in dry, semi-moist and canned forms, and some can now be purchased frozen. The dry food is the most economical, contain the least fat and the most preservatives. The canned food is the most expensive, contain 75% water, usually contain the most fat, and have the least preservatives. Semi-moist foods are also expensive and high in sugar content. In feeding the Dalmatian, the critical part of the diet is not the amount of protein but rather the type of protein.

We need to provide our Dalmatian with a diet that is low in purine, not necessarily a low-protein diet. Vegetable-based diets are not always satisfactory. While broccoli, kale, tomatoes, and carrots are low in purines, asparagus, cauliflower, beans, peas, mushrooms, spinach and whole grains are high in purines. The same is true for meats and dairy. Cheese, milk and eggs are low in purines, but most fish such as herring, mackerel, or sardines, organ meats such as liver, kidney, sweetbreads, poultry such as chicken, duck, or turkey, and meats such as beef, lamb, pork, and veal, are high in purines. The worst offenders are organ meats, and fish. In most commercial diets suitable for Dalmatians, poultry, lamb and eggs are usually the preferred sources for protein while rice is considered as the main source for carbohydrate.

There are commercial low purine diets available from veterinarians. You can also select other diets by paying close attention to their ingredients. In addition, it is also important to pay attention to treats that you give to your Dalmatian. The best treats for this breed includes fruits and cottage cheese. Last but not least, Dalmatians should be encouraged to drink large amounts of fresh, clean water.
