Few folks can resist that adorable ball of fluff known as the Golden Retriever puppy. But before you bring one of those fur balls home from the breeder, it is helpful to get some basic information regarding Golden Retriever obedience training. Training your pup will begin the first day that you bring him home, and will continue for many weeks and even months as your puppy learns the rules of the house and that you are quite serious about enforcing them.

Keep in mind that the cute, ten-pound baby will quickly grow to a fifty or sixty-pound dog that will be much harder to control if he hasn’t already learned proper manners and behavior. When it comes to teaching your dog the various different kinds of Dog Training Hand Commands, you will in the beginning need to use verbal commands also. Teaching your dog how to obey hand commands is very simple and generally, dogs find it very easy to understand these along with verbal commands. It is important that you continue to use the verbal and hand commands for some time, but very slowly you start to voice the commands far less and use hand signals more. At this stage, you should now start to only reward your dog when they actually respond just to the hand commands rather than when you say the word as well. It is important that you do not eliminate the verbal commands straight away, but rather gradually eliminate them. In the beginning, it is a good idea to do half the training when you do the verbal and hand commands together, and the other half just using the hand commands on their own.

After a period of time when they have begun to purely respond to your hand commands then you can start beginning to eliminate the food rewards also. It is crucial that you do not stop providing such treats as soon as they start responding to hand commands, but gradually eliminate them and instead offer your dog praise instead.

When you are going to be teaching your dog to respond to hand commands rather than verbal ones it is a good idea to start of with the most basic commands that you want your dog to respond to. Most owners will start of with the ones we all learn in the beginning with our dogs, which is sit, stay, down and come. Only once you feel that you and your dog are ready should you be moving on to commands that are far more elaborate.

After a recent visit to the stunning regency town of Cheltenham in the heart of the Cotswolds, it becomes clear to see why this town is (or most of it) included within a conservation area of national importance.

When you arrive at Cheltenham Spa railway station, you are about a twenty minute walk from the centre of town, although there is a bus service into town, I decided that with all my luggage, that to hire a Taxi Cheltenham was a better idea, as that would take me directly to the new Express Holiday Inn. As it turned out, this hotel is the other side of the town centre from the railway, so I was happy that I did not attempt to walk it, even though most of the buildings on route deserved much more of my attention than they got, briskly passing them by in one of the finest Taxis In Cheltenham. The decision had already been made that I would have to have a good long slow walk around regency Cheltenham to take in some of the finest buildings that this fair town has to offer.

After booking in at the hotel it was time to go exploring the towns finest buildings, but this would be after a brisk visit to one of the towns newest developments, an old brewery that has been redeveloped into a leisure and retail area, that, enough be it on that subject!

I love the regency building style the Spa town of Cheltenham has to offer, it’s simply unique in it’s own right, unfortunately though, business called my stay short, so I had to jump into a Cheltenham Airport Taxi and dash to Birmingham Airport in time for a 21.00 hrs flight to Aberdeen.

Luckily for me, I had already booked a full week off work in the near future to attend The Cheltenham Literature Festival in early October, so I will be able to return then and have a full and undisturbed week to take in all that this delightful Cotswold town has to offer.

One place I also want to visit on my next trip is The Pittville Pump Rooms. Not very exiting you may think, but you would be wrong! Going back to about 1715, this is when Cheltenham’s Spa water was first discovered on the site as well as at Cheltenham Ladies Collage. In 1788 it is reported that Queen Charlotte visited and bathed in the waters along with George III. Jumping forward to 1825, this is when the first foundation stone was laid of what is now known, and quite famously as the present Pittville Pump Rooms. Anyway, seems I am going off beat again, Cheltenham I will return in October

All too often, many new puppy owners fail to realize how important of having a crate for the puppy. The crate for your pup is a very essential resource when it comes to training your dog and has many awesome uses. In most cases puppies are rather very small and have no clue on what to do with areas that are large. Keeping the puppies in a crate is a great way to calm him or her down. Furthermore, since small puppies do not typically like to potty where they rest, the dog crate will make a great tool for potty training your little guy.

When your puppy gets over excited for any reason, placing him or her in the crate will help the puppy settle down. If you need to leave your puppy by himself for a couple of hours, the little guy can easily get into mischief and have accidents on the floor. All of this lead to over excitement in the puppy as well as stress which can be remedied through the act of placing the puppy in the crate while you are gone.

Remembering that puppies are easily distracted by other events around him, feeding the puppy can be a difficult task as well as a messy one. By placing the puppy in the crate for feeding time, you will be able to minimize the messes as well as the distractions so that your puppy can focus on eating all of his meal.

1) It is very important that the crate you get for the puppy is the right size. If the crate is too small, the puppy will feel cramped but then again if the crate is too large, then house breaking the puppy using a crate will not work. In a large crate, a puppy will use to potty on one side of the crate and sleep on the other which is the exact opposite of what you want him to do which is not potty anywhere in the house.

2) In the event that you have chosen a puppy that will grow in size rather quickly, you may purchase a larger crate but only if it comes with a divider to make the crate the appropriate size for the puppy. This divider can be moved so that the crate will grow as the puppy grows.

3) Keep in mind that even if you purchase the appropriate sized crate for your puppy, if you choose too thick of a bed, the puppy will still potty in the crate as the bedding will absorb the urine. A simple newspaper bedding is all that a puppy really needs. Once you have properly house broken the puppy then you can get him or her a large beds for dogs.

Focus On Your Goals

If you don’t have a destination in mind, how are you ever going to arrive there? This applies to pretty much everything we do every day of our lives, and it applies to training our dogs as well.

It’s a natural emotion to concentrate on the things we don’t want in our lives. And it seems to be a wide spread phenomenon with dog training too. We definitely don’t want our pet to pee on the carpet, or chew our shoes, or ignore us when we tell him what to do, or start barking incessantly when older members of the family come to the house.

But consider this for a second. Especially if you’re thinking of getting a new puppy in the home. Do you really want to spend the next ten, twelve, or sixteen years chasing your dog telling him off for things you didn’t want him to do? Do you agree it’s a better approach to channel your dog towards acceptable behavior from the start?

For example, instead of thinking, “The dog had better not chew my shoes, or furniture,” try, “My dog will chew and play with his own squeezy toys.” Rather than, “I don’t want my dog to jump up on my guests,” what about, “My dog should greet and welcome my guests controlled and quietly.”

By framing your training goals in positive terms, you’ll better appreciate how to achieve what you want. Wouldn’t you agree that’s a much better way to approach your new dog training course.

Use Rewards

Probably the best thing that has happened in house train puppy just recently is a move in focus from highlighting corrective action, or punishing mistakes, to rewarding obedience and favorable actions.

Rewarding a dog is a very effective training technique especially for basic dog training. A fundamental reason for using rewards is that whenever you scald you dog for making a mistake, the outcome could be very demoralizing for both of you. If your dog is of a particular temperament, he may react to being punished by becoming aggressive or fearful. Other dogs shut down. They seem to lose their sense of adventure. Some may even appear completely broken spirited.

Using rewards training methods also makes you feel good. It’s a great feeling to be the bearer of rewards and praise for a well behaved pet.

But the best news is that this approach to dog obedience training works extremely well. It’s due to the fact that this approach to behavior training builds confidence and reassurance. As soon as she discovers that rewards come for a particular action of behavior, your dog is more likely to exhibit that behavior again in the future. By learning how to apply that simple rule, this technique will have your dog behaving like the perfect gentleman (or lady).
