If you are looking for a friendly and loveable pet there really is no better choice than a rabbit. You will find that a rabbit will often be happy to sit on your lap and be stroked and petted. If you decide to own a pet rabbit you need to play your part in ensuring it is happy and healthy. Therefore, rabbit care care should be an important consideration.Rabbits are easy to look after and make a great addition to any family. To ensure your rabbit is healthy and happy try and follow some of these great tips.
Your new rabbit will need a safe, clean hutch with plenty of bedding for warmth. Make sure you can afford the cost of food and ideally buy a run so it has the opportunity to run around. You don’t need to spend a vast amount of money on your hutch, but you do need to buy one big enough for a full size rabbit to be able to stand up in (on its back legs). It should also be wide enough to allow the rabbit to hop at least four full hops in any direction.Just like your own home the ideal hutch should be separated into distinct “rooms” with a space to play, eat, and use the toilet. If you have more than one rabbit in the same hutch you will need to increase this space.Bedding is important. Rabbits like to snuggle down at night and need to be kept warm.Line the hutch with newspaper and cover with dust free chippings and straw. All the bedding should be changed regularly (a great job for the kid’s pocket money!).Look at the space in your garden and decide where the best location is for the hutch with your rabbit in mind, not you. It is not fair to place a rabbit in an area of prolonged, direct sunlight.Cover the hutch at night with a breathable fabric so the rabbit is not confronted with any night time predators such as foxes and cats.If your budget will allow you should buy a rabbit run. This provides a protected area in which the rabbit can run around and play.
Nutrition is an important consideration when feeding your rabbit and they need to eat digestible and indigestible fibre.Rabbits digest their food twice, which is why this is important.Avoid buying cheap, rabbit museli type foods as they are generally packed full of sugar and starch.Search out a specialist rabbit food which contains the two essential fibres and you are giving your rabbit the best chance of a long and happy life. These specialist products are affordable and generally available from a specialist pet centre, vet or online specialist retail outlet. In addition to specialist food try and give your rabbit treats such as apple, banana, broccoli, celery, tomato, turnip and cabbage.
Pets thrive in a loving home, and by following these simple guidelines you are playing your part in being a responsible pet owner.
