Good pet health is closely related to grooming. When well taken care of, animals do feel great. The best dog grooming you can provide to your four-legged friend depends on several factors: your budget, the breed, the size of the dog and its personality. Moreover, nail cutting, hair combing and ear cleaning have to become part of the grooming routine performed regularly. The best dog grooming is normally achieved by following a vet’s suggestions. You can thus groom the pet at home or take it to a professional grooming salon for the operation.

Brushing is the grooming part that most dogs enjoy, and a shiny clean coat is the right premise for good health. Here you’ll have to adjust the brushes to the dog’s coat type. Thus, in order to prevent the tangling and matting of the hair, dogs with long thick hair should be brushed daily. It doesn’t take long and it makes things a lot easier when you take the dog to the groomer for the regular grooming routine. Medium-haired dogs need brushing once a week only, while short-haired breeds are the easiest to care for in terms of brushing. We ought to emphasize the importance of good brushing during the shedding season.

If dogs love brushing, they certainly hate nail trimming. Handling the paws is something difficult no matter the dog which is why lots of owners are afraid that they might hurt the animal during the process. Finding the best dog grooming for the matter means avoiding the pet’s fear of pain, since this will make things a lot easier. A vet technician or a groomer should be entrusted with nail trimming at least once a month, and you may also learn a thing or two from them.

Bathing brings other tough moments for pets and owners. Animal behavior is certainly unpredictable and while some dogs love water others will jump out of the tub the moment they get the chance. Although a monthly bath is enough, there is no harm in bathing them weekly particularly if you have a professional groomer handle the entire operation. Other than smell, bathing makes the perfect solution for hair parasites. Special shampoos are used depending on the case, and occasionally, the vet may have to give some recommendations too.

The use of pet nail clippers usually means some trauma for pets especially if someone has limited experience in using them.

However, it’s a job worth doing simply because it can save a pet owner hundreds of dollars a year in grooming costs. One of the best ways to learn how to use pet nail clippers is to visit your local vet and ask them to give you a demonstration on how to use them correctly.

Most vets will be very accommodating simply because it’s a task they may want to avoid doing given it’s time consuming nature. The other alternative is to visit a pet groomer and while they do a great job, for someone on a limited budget it can prove to be an expensive exercise.

So what type of pet nail clippers suits your pet. There needs to be a clear distinction made here because of the different variations of clippers available, some suit small animals while others are better used on larger pets.

Using the wrong type of clipper on a big dog for example can cause problems. A small set of pet nail clippers can cause the nail to fracture or split and even worse, damage the quick. If this happens then the nail will bleed.

Let’s take a look at the three main types of nail clippers:

Guillotine Clippers

Small pet owners generally use these type of clippers. While they can be used on larger dog breeds there is always the risk of fraying the edge of the nails. This is because the larger animals will usually have thicker nails and there are more suitable clippers for these types of jobs.

The guillotine clippers work by inserting the nail in a small hole at the top of the tool and you simply clamp the handles together to complete the cut.

Pliers

These pet nail clippers are more suited to larger animals. They are preferred by most pet owners because of their ease of use and provide a clear view of where the nail is being cut.

Another advantage is the extra pressure which can be exerted to complete a cleaner cut and this is especially beneficial when tackling large, thick nails.

Scissor Style Clippers

Generally not recommended on larger animals such as dogs. For small animals including birds and guinea pigs, scissor style clippers are a great alternative.

They look as the name implies - like a pair of small scissors but unlike pliers, they don’t give the user the usual strength associated with making the cut. But for light trimming work, they are usually very effective.

Poodle Grooming Tips

Because of the Poodle’s quickly growing a coat, a trim and bath are usually necessary every six to eight weeks. If you have decided that you are going to be the one to take care of the coat, rather than a professional groomer, certain supplies must be on hand. For basic brushing, the pin-bristled brush does the best job. Make sure that the bristles are straight, not curved, and set fairly widely apart on a rubber base. Brushes with curved, widely spaced bristles can damage the coat. A slicker brush that is long in shape and has fine, closely set wires with a slight bend at the tips is recommended for ridding the coat of mats and tangles. A coarse-toothed steel comb and a fine-toothed comb complete the list of tools needed to keep the coat unsnarled.

Clipping the coat requires the use of an electric clipper, preferably one with interchangeable blades. A small animal Clipper is highly recommended by professional groomers as it is lightweight and easily handled. The blades vary in size according to the area of the dog’s body that is to be clipped, with the number of the blade designating how much hair it removes. The higher the number, the more hair it clips off.

It must be noted that these blades can get quite hot during clipping and burn the dog’s skin, so it is recommended that you also purchase a spray lubricant designed to cool and lube the blades. Of course, you could also use hand clippers, but they are much more difficult than the electric to operate, and the entire clipping procedure will take quite a bit longer. Several sharp scissors will also be needed to apply the finishing touches to the look of the coat.

When you begin grooming your poodle, his hindquarter region is a good place to start. By beginning here, the dog cannot see what is occurring behind him, and he should not become nervous or annoyed. Remember, it is a very good rule to accustom your dog to the entire grooming procedure prior to attempting any major clipping. He should be well trained enough so that he will obey your “stay” commands while he is on the grooming table. Make it clear from the start that grooming is to be taken seriously. The procedure should neither be a game nor a wrestling match for either of you.

Begin your grooming routine by first looking for any mats or tangles. Carefully work your fingers through the coat, then repeat the procedure using the fine-toothed comb. If you should find a mat, use your slicker brush or a matting comb. The coat should be brushed up and then down to loosen the matted hairs. Applying a tangle remover to the coat may also help to ease the problem. In any case, mats must be removed prior to the bath to avoid further tightening.

Once you have finished brushing the hindquarters, begin brushing out the hind legs with quick, short, up and down strokes. Repeat the procedure with the front legs. After the legs are completely tangle-free, begin brushing the body, starting at the back end and working up to the neck region. Brush underneath the body, making sure you give this area a proper amount of attention as it is a prime area for matting. The head and ears should be done with great care, as these delicate areas provide much of the Poodle’s beauty if groomed properly.
