The Advantages of Crate Training
Many pet owners have become quite partial to crate training as a way of house training a puppy, and with good reason. A crate can perform a multitude of functions with your little pup. First, it will provide a secure place for your pet to rest and sleep. Second, confining your pup to his crate while you are out will ensure that your house will still be in one piece when you return. Finally, using a crate for house training your puppy will teach your dog to hold his urge to eliminate until he is in the proper location to do so. Most dogs will not eliminate in their crate because they doknow not to go to the bathroom in the same space that they sleep in.

Before placing your puppy in his crate for a period of time, always make sure that he has time outdoors to potty. When you let your dog out of his crate, you should always take him outdoors right away. A crate can be a valuable training tool when you are away from home, or if you are involved in an activity for some time that will stop you from watching your pup sufficiently. Remember that puppies should not be left in a crate all day, although they can sleep in one throughout the night. If you work all day, make every effort to come home for lunch to give your dog a break, or have someone else come by your house to do so.

Paper Training
Paper training does not mean using a rolled newspaper to swat your dog when he potties in the house. This is actually the most ineffective means of potty training a puppy that there is. Paper training actually refers to indoor puppy potty training, where you teach your dog to go to the bathroom on papers or training pads that you put on the floor for him. This type of potty training for puppies is usually best done when you can confine your puppy to a single room in the home, such as the kitchen. Whenever you see your pet begin to nose around the floor like he is looking for a spot, take your puppy to the paper to potty. When he gets this process down, move the papers closer to the door. Soon your puppy will learn to go to the door when he wants to go to the bathroom.

Potty training your puppy can be challenging, but it is far from impossible. With some of patience and consistency, your puppy potty training will succeed much more quickly than you might think.

One thing you can count on when bringing home a new puppy is the fact that he will nip and bite at your fingers during the first few days or weeks. This is perfectly normal and there is no reason to get alarmed that you may have purchased an aggressive dog. However, like any behavior you wish to change about your dog, you need to take a few steps so that he realizes that nipping is not something you as the “pack leader” want him to continue doing.

So how do you change this natural biting behavior that a little puppy has? Well the first thing to do is determine his age. This is important because puppies under the age of about 15 weeks need to be handled a little differently when it comes to mouthing and nipping than puppies over the age of 15 weeks.

If your puppy is brand new and younger than the 15 week period, the following tips can help you control his nipping behavior:

1. Start to show your puppy that you appreciate licking instead of nipping. When he changes his behavior and licks at your fingers or hands, be sure to praise him very lovingly. You can also encourage your puppy to lick more often by rubbing a little butter or coconut oil on your fingers. Let him know by soothing caresses that what he is doing is a good thing with each lick.

2. If your puppy is still biting or nipping at your fingers and he is just been fed and really doesn’t need anything in its mouth, set him aside with a nice bone for a little while. And it is very important not to yell at or scold your puppy along the way. You must create a positive learning environment.

3. Whenever the puppy bites down hard on your fingers or hand, use a disciplinary tone of voice and give a command such as “No No” while looking sharply into his eyes. Hold this firm demeanor for a few moments and then immediately change your body language and go back to whatever it is you’re doing before, and with a soothing approach. Doing this procedure a few times is enough for your puppy to learn the command and to stop biting down hard when he is commanded.

Below are some more tips on bringing a new puppy into the home when you have an older dog already inside the home.

4. When you bring a new puppy into your home that has an established older dog, regardless of the dog’s age he will revert his behaviors back to that of a puppy. The reason for this is that he will see the attention that the new puppy is getting and attempt to mimic the behaviors out of jealousy. You will notice that when the dogs are playing with toys, one of them will attempt to collect all of the toys and guard them vigilantly. This is a form of establishing hierarchy and should not be interfered with.

5. If the dogs do get into a fight, it is important to remember to remain calm and to not yell which will only make the tense situation worse. The dogs will perceive this yelling as a form of threat and may escalate the fight. To actually stop the fighting, ignore the dogs, walk to the door, open it and step outside slamming the door behind you. The dogs are fighting for your attention and the moment that the door slams, they are distracted from the fight and with you gone, there is nothing left fighting over so in most of the cases the fighting will stop almost abruptly.

6. When it comes to feeding time, at first keep them separated. You do not have to place them in separate rooms, but you do want them far enough apart so that they do not compete over the food. Seeing as though the dogs are settling their hierarchy, if you allow them to feed to closely, the dominant dog will take all the food for himself warding off the submissive dog with barks and growls. Above all though, it is important that you feed the dominant dog first followed by the puppy. Later once the hierarchy has been well-established you can move their feedings closer together.

They are also perfect for pets because they are bred to genetically compatible. The parents are hand picked for their temperament, looks as well as personalities.

Though it is unfortunate, it is possible that in the lifetime of your dog they will get hurt. Hopefully it will not be a crippling injury and will be one they recover from quickly. The best way to make sure your dog doesn’t get injured is to train your dog. Obedience is the key here. Dogs that run out into the street are likely to be hit by a car. So to avoid that, you want to train your dog to obey words like “stay”, or “sit”. Other possibilities of injury are dog fights. Training won’t insure that your dog never gets hurt, but should make the chances of it happening far less likely.

So if your dog does get hurt, what do you do? The first thing you need to do is assess the situation. If you happen to see the incident, then you will immediately know what just happened. If not, then you will get a good indication when you examine your dog. If your dog is unable to walk or won’t come to you then you know there is a very good chance there are broken bones. Make sure to carefully look them over. The worst possibility is that there is a spine injury.

The next step is to get them to a safe place. If they are not moving, then to keep them from further injury it is good to get a coat or something flat under them. Then you can either drag them away, or if you are able, carry them to safety. If they are bleeding a lot, then try to find some cloth to wrap around the wound to stop bleeding. You might have to tear or cut off a piece of your shirt if this is the case, or use your coat if you have one. You can also use their collar to help stop bleeding if there is nothing else. Just tighten it up as best you can. Some kinds of collars won’t work though. It will be difficult, but one of the best things you can do is to reassure your dog by using a calm voice. Just keep speaking to them. If you and your dog have had time to become close, then your dog should already see you as security and comfort. It won’t help a lot, but it will help.

Of course the next thing to do is to get them to the vet quickly. Even if the injury isn’t severe, it is good to take them anyways. After your dog checks out, they will need some time to rest and recover. If the injury was pretty bad, you will want to get them a comfortable bed to sleep in. There are plenty of comfortable quality dog beds to choose from that will work. You want something that will take pressure off of joints so make sure it is well padded. You will also want to put their favorite durable dog toys by them for comfort. Also, if you wound up using their collar to stop any bleeding or it got damaged, there are plenty of quality dog collars out there to replace it with. Just keep up their fluid intake and try to get them to eat. Monitor the progress and follow up with a visit to the vet as needed.
