Taking Care Of A Pet Rabbit
Rabbits make great pets thanks to their friendly and inquisitive nature. Many rabbits love human interaction and enjoy being held and stroked.Make sure that if you adopt a rabbit as a pet you look after it and ensure rabbit care is a priority in order for it to benefit from a long and happy life.A rabbit is generally an easy pet to care for, but before you adopt one you need to bear several things in mind.
Before you adopt a rabbit make sure you can provide it with a hutch, bedding, adequate amounts of food and enough safe, open space for it to be able to run around.Make sure the hutch you buy has enough space to accommodate a full size rabbit, with space to run and stand. It should also be wide enough to allow the rabbit to hop at least four full hops in any direction.Just like your own home the ideal hutch should be separated into distinct “rooms” with a space to play, eat, and use the toilet.Of course, if you have more than one rabbit you will need to provide a bigger hutch. To ensure the rabbit is warm at night you must invest in a good quality bedding. When lining your hutch use newspaper which should then be covered with dust free straw.Look at the space in your garden and decide where the best location is for the hutch with your rabbit in mind, not you. It is not fair to place a rabbit in an area of prolonged, direct sunlight.During daylight hours your rabbit should be free to look outside the hutch. However, at night you need to cover the hutch so the rabbit cannot see predators such as foxes and cats.In addition to your hutch consider buying a run. Rabbits enjoy being allowed to hop around and a run provides them with a protective area in which to do this.
Your rabbits diet is important and you need to understand that they need 2 specific types of fibre – digestible and indigestible.Rabbits digest their food twice, which is why this is important.Foods like supermarket brand museli can be high in sugar and starch, both of which are not healthy ingredients. Try and avoid buying this food. The best type of rabbit food is usually available from a specialist retailer and will have been extensively tested and formulated. It is easy to find a specialist pet food retailer, either online or on the high street.Rabbits love a treat, so offer it healthy and tasty snacks like fresh apple, chopped cabbage and juicy tomatoes.
Pets thrive in a loving home, and by following these simple guidelines you are playing your part in being a responsible pet owner.
